Seaglass & Copper Pendant

Creating this pendant was an exciting challenge for me. The centerpiece is a beautifully deep green piece of sea glass that I found on our beach here in Gibraltar. It’s likely a bottle bottom – now transformed by the sea into a smooth-ish, frosted gem.

What I love most about this piece (and ironically why I took on the challenge of making it) is the way I incorporated the natural shape of the sea glass into the design. There is a natural dip in the glass that I wanted to utilize by melting the copper in that dip almost in a ribbon style.

This was so so hard to get right, because once the metal is hardened, you have to carefully soften it again with heat – which means I couldn’t attach the metal to the glass until I was certain I was done with the forming.

But I’m happy with the result – it honors the organic beauty of the sea glass while elevating it into a wearable work of art. I also played with fire (literally) to give the copper some more interesting colour hues – you can see those in the video close up.

Speaking of ‘close-ups’: from certain angles it almost resembles a warrior’s face with a protective headcover.

It’s a serendipitous nod to my intended Viking and Romanesque influences for the design – a playful blend of ancient warrior spirit with the tranquillity of sea-tumbled glass.

In terms of the practicalities: you have a securely fitted loop to hang it by. What chain you choose for it is up to you. You can go for leather, or copper, or layer it on to another beaded necklace to add volume. I can see it pairing up nicely with a set of seaglass earrings too (unabashedly – may I suggest you look at some of my creations 🙂

The Copper Sea pendant is more of a wearable treasure, a conversation starter. Definitely a unique expression of your personal style. In my way – this is my little contribution to helping our environment. Isn’t nature ‘funny’ – we dump broken glass pieces in her waters, she mulls them over and spits back tiny treasures that bring us closer to her just by looking at them. It’s the perfect example of a love cycle.
